Dolly Varden

Salvelinus malma

(Up to 4 lbs)

dolly vardenDolly Varden trout are a subspecies of anadromodous fish in the salmon family but there are also landlocked populations in BC. They are similar to and often confused with Bull trout, but have a smaller head and blunter snout. Their dark green bodies also sport more numerous, smaller spots on the back but the true distinction is that Dollies have fewer branchiostegal rays. They can be found in coastal rivers and lakes feeding on small fish, fish eggs, invertebrates and insects.

Method: : Sink Tip lines with weighted flies.

Gear: 4-5-6 wt rods.

Flies:

  • Zonkers (white or natural)

  • Wooly buggers
